Misconceptions Affecting Petroleum Exploration*

Mason L. Hill

Abstract

Economic and political factors are probably more important than science and technology in determining the amount of oil that will be discovered in any given area. Consequently, exploratory risk and magnitude of potential resources should not be expressed in absolute mathematical terms. Additional common misconceptions about petroleum exploration exist which, unfortunately, are shared by some economists, politicians, and even key individuals within the petroleum industry. A few of these misconceptions are reviewed in the light of the present day energy needs and practical exploration problems.
