Abstract

The sediments, structure and tectonics of the continental shelf bordering the Indian peninsular region between Karikal and Calcutta are considered with particular reference to the geophysical surveys, well data and geological surveys, well data and geological work undertaken in adjacent land areas.

The rocks exposed in the basins bordering the continental shelf represent thinner stratigraphic intervals as compared to the sequence in the offshore. An intensive development of NE-SW faults, coupled with differential movement along them, gave rise to a system of horsts and grabens within the basement. Older pre-Mesozoic sediments were affected by the basin morphology, and younger sediments by a general basinal tilt towards East or South-East.

The oil and gas prospects of the region are discussed based on the interpretation of the available geological and geophysical data.
