Deterministic and Statistical Wavelet Processing

Lee Lu

Abstract

Wavelet processing techniques are based on the convolution model for a seismic trace. They can be divided into two categories (deterministic and statistical) according to availability of the source wavelet. In the deterministic wavelet processing, the wavelet is given, we can then design a shaping filter to shape the wavelet to a desired output to improve the resolution of data. If the bask wavelet is unavailable, we may use the statistical approaches to extract it directly from the data. Various statistical methods including the minimum entropy, L1 and L2 norm methods are discussed.
