Crude Oil Hydrocarbon Analysis: Some Techniques and Uses

S. Thompson

Abstract

Petroleum is comprised mainly of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons usually with minor quantities of oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur compounds, and traces of some metals. The composition of hydrocarbons in crude oil is readily characterised by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry analyses, the operating principles of which are discussed. This composition reflects the type and thermal history of the source material and subsequent alterations of the generated crude oil in subsurface reservoirs. Compositional characteristics of certain types of hydrocarbons may be further used for oil to oil and oil to source rock correlations, and these may be particularly useful for migration studies.
