Bengal Basin: Current Exploration of the Hinge Zone Area of South-western Bangladesh

C. A. Salt, Md Monsur Alam, Md Mosharref Hossain

Abstract

An extensive seismic reflection exploration programme to investigate the prospectivity of the Hinge Zone Area of Southwestern Bangladesh is currently being mounted by BOGMC (ex-Petrobangla) and O.D.A. The present survey comprises 2100 line-km of land seismic data acquired over 2 field seasons during 1984 and 1985. Seismic-Stratigraphic analysis plays an important role in evaluating depositional framework and potential leads and prospects, which have been identified in sediments of Gondwana to Miocene-Pliocene age and generally involve a major element of stratigraphic trapping. Potential trap types are reviewed and their prospectivity assessed.

The project continues studies undertaken by BOGMC (ex-Petrobangla) and various foreign collaborators in the Hinge Zone Area located West of the proven gas fields of the eastern fold belt. The project area is presently undrilled. The programme is aimed at quickly identifying drilling prospects but, in addition, provides new essential data for understanding the development of the Bengal Basin as a whole.

The project has provided for the first time modern high quality seismic reflection data from this part of the Bengal Basin and makes possible the resolution of leads and prospects through seismic-stratigrahic interpretation. Interpretation to date confirms our belief that potential exists for future hydrocarbon discoveries. However, the project area remains untested by drilling.
