First Foreign Onshore Petroleum Exploration Project in China

R. J. Mollah

Abstract

Hainan Island lies off the southern coast of the People’s Republic of China and is the site of the first foreign onshore petroleum exploration and exploitation project in China. The Fushan Depression Contract Area is part of the Beibuwan Basin. The Operator CSR Orient Oil Pte. Ltd. has conducted a seismic survey in areas of dense population and intense cultivation and has denned several drilling prospects despite technical problems associated with the presence of surface basalts. Four wells are being drilled. Good cooperation exists between the Chinese side and the foreign operator and the project could be viewed as a model for future onshore explorers in China.
