The Impact of Modern Seismic in an Old Field

A. M. Kamis, W. R. Van Der Vlugt

Abstract

This paper describes the use of modern seismic techniques in resolving the structurally complex Central Area of the Seria Field in Negara Brunei Darussalam.

The Central Area has a characteristic crestal collapse structure in the centre of the Seria anticline, penetrated by approximately 400 wells, the majority of which drilled before 1960. In this highly faulted area, well performance and reservoir behaviour indicate that drainage areas do not concur with the presently available maps. As a result, a structural review was carried out supported by a specially acquired High Resolution Seismic survey in 1984. The High Resolution Seismic is particularly useful in distinguishing the hade of faults which cannot be resolved by well data alone. The integration of well data and the High Resolution Seismic has proven to be very successful in helping to solve this structurally complex area.

The application of modern seismic techniques has improved the structural definition of the strongly faulted Central Area of the Seria Field. This has resulted in an increased possibility for further development and appraisal in addition to improved ultimate recovery in this old field.
