Geology of the West Linapacan “A” Field, Offshore Palawan, Philippines

Virgil A. Walston, Jr., Hans G. Oesterle

Abstract

The West Linapacan “A” Field is located in Service Contract No. 14, off the northern tip of Palawan Island. The block is operated by a consortium led by Alcorn (Production) Philippines, Inc. The trap of the West Linapacan “A” Field is of a large, wrench-fault related anticline with an areal closure of 4,400 acres (17.8 sq km) and a vertical closure of about 1,100 ft (335 m). The discovery well was drilled in late 1990 in 1,142 ft (348 m) of water to a total depth of 6,102 ft (1,860 m). Hydrocarbons were encountered in coarse massflow sediments of Lower Miocene age, called the Galoc Clastic Unit of the Pagasa Formation and in deep-water limestones, informally called the Linapacan Limestone, also of Lower Miocene age. On test, the Linapacan Limestone flowed over 5,000 bo/d from each of two separate test intervals. Drillstem tests of reservoirs within the Galoc Clastic Unit were disappointing. Two successful appraisal wells were drilled in late 1991 and early 1992. On test, the appraisal wells flowed from the Linapacan Limestone 33 degree API oil at stabilized rates of 4,500 to 6,800 bo/d, with maximum flow rates of up to 9,350 bo/d. Recoverable reserves in the West Linapacan “A” Field are estimated at over 100 million bbls. The three wells have been on stream since May 1992 and are producing at an average rate of 16,000 bo/d into a floating production and storage facility.
