Redirecting Exploration Strategies in Offshore Central Philippines

Freddie G. Rillera, Philip M. Rimando, Dennis V. Panganiban

Abstract

The offshore area covered by the Visayan Sea, northern Tañon Strait and Asid Gulf between the Islands of Cebu, Negros and Masbate in central Philippines offers a number of new exploration opportunities. Forming part of the Tertiary Visayan Basin, the area constitutes the offshore sector of two exploration blocks (GSEC 69 and one under application) operated by a consortium led by Cophil Exploration Corporation.

Past exploration efforts failed to amply test the petroleum potential of this vast (12,500 square kilometers) offshore area where only ten (10) wells have been drilled since 1976. In comparison, the still under explored onshore portion of Cophil’s blocks (northern half of Cebu Island) which only covers 2,500 square kilometers has some 120 wells. Moreover, most If not all of the offshore wells were largely focused on a common target, i.e. Late Tertiary reefs, which, either did not have sufficient trap integrity, or, had poor or no contact whatsoever with deep, potentially mature source rocks.

Recent review of existing geological and geophysical data demonstrate the presence of several, large, exploration plays which up to this time remain untested. With the recognition of these new exploration possibilities, it is hoped that this paper will serve as the impetus for a renewed search for oil and gas in this part of the Philippines.
