Commercial Gas Possibilities in Manila Bay and its Environs

Alessandro O. Sales, Freddie G. Rillera, Dennis V. Panganiban, Ma. Victoria M. Martinez

Abstract

The Manila Bay area lies at the southwest and of the Central Luzon Basin. It hosts a large, well-defined prospect which is flanked to the east-southeast by a thick pile (25,000 to 30,000 feet) of Tertiary sediments. While the possibility for oil is not precluded, results of previous exploratory drillings in the Central Luzon Basin. appear to indicate that the prospect is most probably gas-prone.

Sporadic exploration works in the Central Luzon Basin began in 1950. Since then, a total of fifteen (15) wells have been drilled in the basin. In retrospect however, most of these wells were either drilled off-structure or not valid tests of the targets.

Though a number of these wells reported varying gas shows, only one well. Victoria-1 drilled by Amoco in 1979 tested and flowed dry gas (C1) at 1.2 MMCFPD from Early Pliocene Sandstones. Inspite of these results, no concerted efforts were ever pursued to try to determine the reserves and the commercial implications of the discovery or to further study the gas potential of the basin. Perhaps it was because natural gas was not viewed as a desirable product of exploration at that time.

With past exploration results, recent studies and a new economic climate, it appears that the basin offers good potential for commercial natural gas. The Manila Bay Prospect which could host 1 to 2 TCF of natural gas is one interesting structure which deserves to be tested. Several other structures can be mapped in the onshore areas which may prove to be good follow-on prospects, should something significant come from drilling in Manila Bay.
