Concrete Platform Structures for Asia-Pacific

Bjoern Svensvik

Abstract

There has been a growing interest for concrete platform structures for the oil and gas industry in the Asia-Pacific region during the last couple of years, and this trend seems to be increasing.

In the following a short historical background is given on the use of concrete as construction material for Previous HitmarineTop structures in general and for platforms for the oil and gas industry in particular. Further, criteria of importance in connection with the choice of concepts for oil and gas platforms are presented, along with the criteria favouring concrete as construction material for both floaters and gravity based structures.

Conditions are somewhat different in Asia-Pacific compared to in the North Sea where concrete has played an important role already for 25 years. These differences are highlighted and specific Asia-Pacific demands are presented.

Examples on different types of concepts are presented for gravity based and floating structures for platforms, storage tanks and LNG plants.

Finally, a brief presentation of contract types and considerations for a successful project execution is mentioned, along with a few concluding remarks.
