Underwater Welding for Offshore Jacket and Pile Repair

James M. Reiners, Thomas J. Reynolds

Abstract

In the Fall of 1995, Hurricane Opal caused a mat support drilling unit over Chevron U.S.A. Production Company’s Mobile 864 “BA” structure to skid until it came to rest adjacent to the three pile jacket. The drilling unit could not jack down its hull without impinging upon the top of the jacket structure. Therefore, several structural members of the jacket were removed so the drilling unit could be jacked down and be floated so it could be repositioned back over the well.

The jacket then had to be repaired to its original design specifications so that the production deck could be installed. To accomplish this task, a procedure was developed incorporating underwater and above water welding. All underwater welded connections were made in accordance with the American Welding Society’s “Specification on Underwater Welding”, D3.6-93 for Class A and B welds.
