Unocal Deepwater E&P

G. N. Christenson

Abstract

Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines) deepwater drilling increased drastically from 1990-2002 from 12 wells to 1025. Unocal's 1997-2002 Saturation Exploration (SX) campaign increased the water depths in which wells were drilled from 1000 feet to 7000 feet water depth. Non-Unocal offshore exploration wells in water depths >1500 feet from 1990-2002 produced >500MBO in NE Borneo and >750MMBOE in NE Palawan. Unocal offshore exploration wells during the same time period produced >2000MMBOE in Kutei with >100 wells under explored. Unocal's current acreage in three countries includes 14 Blocks and >50,000km2 with a resource of >2000mmboe. From 1998-2002, 93 wells were drilled, 51 new field wildcats (NFW), 10 Discoveries with ~1750MMBOEp50 and ~325MMBOp50. Unocal's planned deepwater projects span from 2003 to 2010. West Seno consists of 3 TLPs, 1 spread-moored FPU barge, 60 MBOPD/150 MMCFD capacity with 48-52 wells. Unocal's deepwater programs continue due to the virtuous circle.
