Defining Structural Style Using Satellite Imagery and DEM's: Examples from the Bird's Head, Western Papua and the Masilah Basin, Yemen

Mike Oehlers

Abstract

The presentation focuses on work carried out in Salawati Basin, but also throughout the Birds Head at a regional scale. The study aims to provide a solution to a regional interpretation often hampered by cloudy, poor data quality, establish structural framework and relative timing of structural events, integrate published data with interpretation to re-define play fairways if possible and establish areas for further, more detailed study using ASTER/SPOT 5 DEM. Solution to the poor quality data is to use different, recently released Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data and merge it with radar data for use at both regional and detailed scales. Benefits of SRTM- radar merge is a better visualisation of lowland terrain than if mapped with radar only, allows visualisation of structure and stratigraphic texture, allow for moderately flat to rolling terrain to be imaged better due to elevation component of SRTM-DEM merge, make integrating seep analysis possible as well as identify anthropological features. Detailed interpretations can have exploration implications. Further possibilities for work in the Lengguru foldbelt are discussed and are then compared to results in a similar setting in the Zagros Mountains in Iran. Lastly, related techniques are discussed with respect to the Masilah Basin, Yemen, in an extensional setting.
