Prospectivity and Exploration Challenges of SC41 Deepwater Sandakan Basin, South Sulu Sea

Staff of Tap Oil Ltd.

Abstract

The Deepwater Sandakan Basin in the South Sulu Sea is highly prospective for oil and gas but is under-explored relative to other circum-Borneo Basins. NE Sbah lies in a complex active boundary zone between several major plates. The Sulu Sea is a deep NE-SW elongated back-arc basin formed in the Lake Oligocene-Early Miocene. All petroleum system elements (reservoir, traps, seals and source) are either proven or highly likely to be present. SC41 has circum-Borneo geology with Filipino fiscal terms. A significant number of medium to large prospects and leads of several different play types remain untested. The JV has a well thought out, multi-faceted exploration program in place to enable it to unlock the potential of this area. It is hoped that good science coupled with persistence will eventually yield success. The JV is looking for a suitable partner to join us in this developing HC province.
