Depositional Processes in the Bay of Bengal

Paul Strong

Abstract

Santos has acreage in the Bay of Bengal in Bangladesh Block 16 and India NEC-DWN-2004/1 & 2. The regional setting of the Bay of Bengal includes the Ganges Brahmaputra Delta and the Bengal fan, the world's largest delta and submarine fan. The thickest sediment section In the Bay of Bengal is in the shallow water area. In shallow water setting, reservoirs are in tidal-dominated systems with fluvial influence in the north such as massive sands deposited by turbidity currents. Decreasing reservoir continuity is due to considerable scouring of the Plio-Pleistocene section particularly in nested channel complexes. In deep water setting, reservoirs are in channel-levee complexes including, basal erosion, channel aggradation, levees build up, and abandonment and avulsion phase or in mass transport deposits including slumps and debris flows.
