Abstract:
The Absaroka sequence, as defined by Sloss et al. (1949) and Sloss (1963), comprises strata ranging from latest Mississippian through Early Jurassic age. In the Illinois basin, the Absaroka sequence is represented by the Pennsylvanian System and one known occurrence of Permian rocks. The lower boundary is an unconformity developed upon rocks of the Sauk, Tippecanoe, and Kaskaskia sequences. The upper boundary is the pre-Quaternary or recent erosion surface, except in a small area of western Illinois where outliers of Upper Cretaceous (Zuni sequence) sediments are present.
