ABSTRACT

This chapter details the evolution of geologic mapping, from the earliest days of computer-aided drafting and automated cartography to the most recent and advanced applications of Previous HitgeographicNext Hit Previous HitinformationNext Hit Previous HitsystemsNext Hit (GIS). The technical aspects of GIS are reviewed and discussed, and the developmental progression to geoscience Previous HitinformationNext Hit Previous HitsystemsNext Hit (GSIS) and associated modeling approaches is presented. Future trends in GIS technology are also identified, particularly as they impact petroleum exploration and production activities. Enhanced capabilities in mapping and in Previous HitinformationNext Hit access, integration, and management are shown to depend on successful implementation of additional Internet and Web-based functionality.
