ABSTRACT
A geographic information system (GIS) can be a powerful tool
for analyzing petroleum data. Using GIS successfully on any particular project depends on
maintaining a balance between costs and benefits. This paper describes the use of a GIS
approach in the evaluation of properties prior to acquisition in South America, the west
coast of Africa, and the North Sea. For the areas of interest, the base map data were
contained on a CD-ROM. Digital information on the concessions in each area was also
obtained, to which proprietary data, such as seismic line locations, were added as
appropriate. Maps containing all this information were constructed and used to evaluate
concessions on a competitive bid or negotiated sale basis. The GIS system proved to be a
cost-effective way to present the data in support of the decision-making process.
