Abstract:

Eastern Kentucky in 8 years has become the most important gas-producing area east of Mississippi River. Most favorable results, with a very small percentage of dry holes, have been obtained from the "Brown carbonaceous shales" of Devonian age, because of the physical effect of shooting the entire 400-600 feet of shale with an explosive mixture consisting of 80 per cent gelatin.

This article describes the geological and physical conditions which control the gas industry of this section.
