Abstract:

The Kaybob Beaverhill Lake oil field is located in the Swan Hills area of Alberta, approximately 150 mi (241 km) northwest of Edmonton. Production is from the upper Swan Hills Formation of the Beaverhill Lake Group, at an approximate depth of 9,800 ft (2,987 m). The reservoir is a limestone reef complex of Middle Devonian to early Late Devonian age. Maximum reef thickness is 257 ft (78.3 m). The reef complex is divisible into four major facies: organic-reef, backreef, forereef, and offreef facies. The thickest "pay" sections and best reservoir characteristics occur in the organic-reef facies. Original oil in place is estimated to have been 300 million bbl. There is no gas cap or water table in the pool.
