Abstract:

The Viking Gas Field produces natural gas from the Leman Sandstone Formation in the Lower Permian Rotliegendes Group. The area is difficult to map seismically because of complexities introduced by the overlying Upper Permian Zechstein, mobile salt. Nine independent accumulations have been developed. Exploration and development programs must both take into account the rapidly changing facies of the desert sandstone reservoir. A fluvial-wadi course is outlined bisecting the field, accounting for poor reservoir performance in certain areas of the field. Petrographic work shows the deleterious influence of diagenesis of the varied and mixed facies. Integration of detailed facies analyses and well productivity data should lead to methods for attaining more efficient recoveries
