Abstract:

The Empire Abo field is a giant oil accumulation discovered by Pan American Petroleum Corporation using mainly stratigraphic principles. Recognition and delineation of shelf and basin facies in the lower Leonard Series of Permian age enabled postulation of a barrier reef of the same age along the hinge line of the Delaware basin. Structure maps, isopach studies, detailed sample analyses, and cross sections were used and were integrated into successful exploratory techniques. Barrier-reef concepts which have been applied successfully to petroleum exploration along the Abo reef trend have application to rocks of other ages in other carbonate provinces.
