Abstract:

Numerous dry holes had been drilled in the vicinity of the Black Lake field, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, before its discovery, and six wildcats had penetrated the zone which is productive in the field. The production in the Black Lake field comes from a biohermal-type reef ("Pettet" zone) of the Sligo Formation, which is of Early Cretaceous age. A combination of geology and geophysics was used in exploration.

This field is unique in the manner in which the operators have handled the development; unitization was carried out before any competitive production was allowed, and facilities for full pressure-maintenance gas cycling were installed and placed in operation before any appreciable amount of hydrocarbons was withdrawn from the reservoir.
