Abstract:

In multichannel seismic reflection records off Kodiak Island, the Aleutian Trench sediment and the top of the oceanic crust can be traced 40 km landward under the slope where it is about 6 km beneath the mid-slope terrace. Under the lower slope, the section becomes tectonically consolidated, and at the midslope terrace it is tilted so steeply that bedding can no longer be resolved with present seismic instruments. Below the upper slope, mildly deformed beds are seen in a 0.5- to 1-km-thick downslope sediment blanket. The forearc basin directly landward of the shelf edge is even less deformed. The area most visibly affected by deformation from subduction is the lower and middle slope. This is one of the structural styles in the subduction zone along the eastern Aleutian Tr nch.
