Abstract:

The classification of the Ordovician System in North America involves the establishment of a succession of stages based on carbonate rock units in widely scattered regions. The provincial character of faunas makes intercontinental correlation difficult. The correlation of the graptolite zones with the carbonate stages is established for a few levels; the two facies rarely are found in stratigraphic succession. The graptolite zones are generally very similar to those in Europe, and some workers apply the standard British-Scandinavian zones to North America sequences.
