Abstract:

Lithology, metamorphism, and internal structure of the Precambrian rocks of western Newfoundland clearly link them with rocks of nearby Labrador. Block motions, both vertical and horizontal, are implied by variations in the nature and position of the sedimentary cover. Lateral motion counterclockwise through 30° is indicated by paleomagnetic data. The movements can be ordered in time, and suggest that the formation of the western Newfoundland klippe (or klippen) was linked to the rotation of the Precambrian block.
