Abstract:

Geothermal surveys have been conducted for 10 years at Cerro Prieto, Baja California, and for 15 years in other areas of Mexico. In April 1973, commercial operation of the first power plant of 75,000-kw capacity, using natural geothermal steam, was initiated at Cerro Prieto.

The future of geothermal energy in Mexico is very attractive, owing to the presence of approximately 130 known areas that have potential for geothermal development. Cerro Prieto is the only area developed at present; five more areas are being investigated.
