Abstract:

Comparative analysis of seismic and magnetic data suggests that the principal anomaly-producing body in the central part of the Black Sea is the basalt layer with seismic velocities of 6.6-7.0 km/sec. It is proposed that this layer is gabbroic in nature. The essentially "granitic" layer in the marginal regions of the basin is nonmagnetic and most likely is composed of metamorphosed sedimentary units. The nature and age of the fractures are believed to be varied. Deformation and seismicity in the area south of Alushta and southwest of Novorossiysk indicate that this is a tectonically active area.
