Abstract:
The concentrations of inorganic phosphorus and total phosphorus in the Black Sea were measured during the cruise of the R/V Atlantis II. Organic phosphorus was determined from the difference between total and inorganic phosphorus. The values obtained have been compared with earlier measurements by Russian scientists. Detailed studies have been made of the distribution of phosphorus through the halocline and close to the bottom of the central deep-sea basin. By use of a model of the water balance of the Black Sea, a crude phosphorus-balance model was constructed. It appears that 6,700 tons/year of phosphorus must be added to the Black Sea sediments in order for the phosphorus concentration to remain at a constant level.
