Abstract:
Several transgressive-regressive sedimentation cycles were recognized in the upper Oligocene to lower Pliocene in northwestern Puerto Rico. These are represented by the upper San Sebastian-Lares, "lower Montebello," Los Puertos, "Aymamon," and Quebradillas formations. The inner neritic to terrestrial paleoenvironments of the Cibao Formation do not allow the recognition of cycles.
Correlation of the northern Puerto Rican cycles of sedimentation with global sea-level changes is possible because tectonic movements in the Oligocene to Pliocene did not affect the water paleodepths significantly. The cycles of sedimentation were used to correlate some of the lithostratigraphic units of northern Puerto Rico.
