Abstract:
Seismic reflection profiles correlated with deep stratigraphic test wells reveal a series of depositional sequences that can be traced through the three major sedimentary basins of the submerged U.S. Atlantic margin. These sequences are bounded in large part by unconformities whose stratigraphic positions are similar to those predicted by Vail's model of relative coastal onlap and eustatic sea-level change. The Mesozoic depositional sequences nearly match the supercycles of Vail's model, but the Cenozoic record indicates marked variability among the basins. Little doubt exists that these depositional sequences are the product of sea-level fluctuations modulated by changing depositional rates and variable rates of basin subsidence.
