Abstract:

Depositional sequences and their associated key surfaces are expressed in aerial photographs by specific surfaces, photofacies, and photostratigraphic units. Some examples of aerial photographic characteristics of depositional sequence boundaries, distinct systems tracts, and transgressive and downlap surfaces are discussed. These examples are from Upper Cretaceous and Eocene strata of the south-central Pyrenees, where accurate photostratigraphic analysis and detailed stratigraphic sedimentological observations in the field have been integrated. Such an integrated approach is a useful tool for high-resolution description of outcrop sequence stratigraphy units and surfaces on a scale approaching multifold seismic reflection scale.
