ABSTRACT

Previous Hit3-DNext Hit seismic data are used to unravel the tectonic history of productive Middle Devonian (Givetian) patch reef dolomites of the Keg River Formation in the eastern Peace River Arch area of north-central Alberta. Here, subtle reactivations of an orthogonal network of Precambrian normal faults has directly influenced reef initiation and development. A patch reef trend consisting of irregular, low-relief buildups, together with smaller, neighboring bodies, is clearly identified to be rooted on raised Precambrian structures. On-structure amplitude dimming of the normally strong near-Keg River event marks the location of buildups. Previous Hit3-DTop mapping allows faults imaged adjacent to Precambrian on-structure dimmed zones to be traced beneath reefs. Such structures constitute important fluid migration conduits, often controlling later dolomitization and hydrocarbon potential of Keg River Formation reefs.
