Trend Surface Analysis of Trace Chemical Data, Park City District, Utah

M. P. Nackowski, Charles A. Mardirosian, Joseph M. Botbol

Abstract

Widely spaced geochemical soil samples were analyzed to determine whether mineralized trends could be identified in the Park City district, Utah. Also multiple regression trend surface analysis was applied to soil sample geochemical data compiled. Nearly 150 samples were analyzed with an X-ray spectrometer for Cu-Pb-Zn and Mn. The trace metal distributions reflected known mineralized zones. The Cu-Pb-Zn abundance frequencies approximated log normal distributions whereas the Mn abundance frequency approximated a normal distribution. First, second, and third degree trend surfaces establish an east-southeasterly trend for district wide Cu-Pb-Zn abundances and an inferred metal zonation with an east-southeast trend based on Cu-Pb ratios. These east-southeast trends are superimposed on the established east-northeast trend of individual mines and ore bodies in the district.
