Abstract
History of Coal Mining in Carbon and Emery Counties, Utah 1870–1980
Abstract
Coal mining in the Carbon and Emery county area began in the late 1870s as fuel became scarce in Salt Lake City. New railroads, which were attracted by the coal resources, provided an efficient means of transporting the coal long distances from the remote mountain mines to population and industrial centers. The mining industry developed rapidly in response to the needs of the growing nation. Many national events are reflected in the history of the coal industry in Utah. Health and safety concerns, unionization as well as technological changes all had their effect on the local coal industry. This paper presents a brief summary of over one hundred years of mining history, highlighting the most significant events in the evolution of the industry.
