Abstract
Grieve Paleovalley of the Muddy Sandstone in the Eastern Wind River Basin, Wyoming
Abstract
During the deposition of the Lower Cretaceous Muddy Sandstone, a paleovalley was eroded by a river which crossed the west end of Casper Mountain and continued west through the Grieve oilfield into the eastern part of the Wind River Basin, Wyoming ( in pocket). Examination of the outcropping Muddy sandstones which were deposited in the Grieve paleovalley indicates that: 1) the lowest part of the paleovalley was filled with fluvial sands; 2) marine sands and muds filled the higher part of the paleovalley during marine transgression; and 3) muds filled with plant fragments and plant roots were deposited on islands or hills on the southwest flank of the paleovalley.
