Depth Imaging Seismic Data to Help Delineate Gas Reservoirs in Southwest Wyoming

Alvin K. Benson

Abstract

Seismic reflection data can be imaged to form an accurate picture of the true geology of the earth in complex areas where the velocity changes abruptly, both vertically and laterally, such as the Overthrust Belt. A subsurface velocity model necessary to form these accurate pictures can be obtained from the data using self-consistent computer modeling. Some examples from southwest Wyoming are examined to help delineate possible gas reservoirs. The modeling is controlled with data available from nearby wells. The methods are essential for clarifying structure beneath complex overburden to help delineate and assess subsurface traps.
