Oligocene Gas Potential Along the Southern Margin of the Powder River Basin

James A. Bauer

Abstract

Commercial quantities of natural gas occur in the Oligocene White River Formation along the southern margin of the Powder River Basin at Douglas, Shawnee, Orpha, and South Douglas Fields. The White River Formation consists of unconsolidated sandstones, shales, and conglomerates, and overlies Cretaceous and older strata with angular unconformity. Most of the gas is stratigraphically trapped in the basal Oligocene sandstones and conglomerates, and probably migrated from Cretaceous sources immediately below the unconformity. Although the reservoirs are discontinuous and have limited areal extents, they will be attractive exploration targets due to their shallow drilling depths, when the price of gas increases and demand for natural gas returns.
