Geology and Geochemistry of the Quaking Asp Mountain and Black Butte Silicified Zones, Green River Basin

W. Dan Hausel, Gordon G. Marlatt, Eric L. Nielsen, Robert W. Gregory

Abstract

Two silicified zones south and east of Rock Springs yielded weakly anomalous amounts of gold and arsenic. In addition, some kaolinite and alunite occur in the silicified zone. The source of these alteration products is unknown, but may have originated from a paleo-thermal source or by diagenetic processes. At any rate, the silicified zone is widespread, covering a region of 20 to 30 mi2.
