Gold and Tungsten Deposits in a Part of the Sugarloaf District, Boulder County, Colorado

R. L. Langenheim, Jr.

Abstract

Tungsten and gold mineralization in the vicinity of the Livingstone Fault and Iron Dike between Sugarloaf and Boulder Canyon is confined to east-west trending, predominantly strike-slip faults. Ferberite and gold tellurides generally occur in the same or nearby veins. Gold is more or less evenly distributed within the area, but tungsten appears concentrated in the southeast.

Sixteen properties appear to have produced ore at one time or another, but none of the workings are extensive. Gold mining was active in the two decades following location of the Livingstone claims in the 1870’s, and enjoyed a burst of renewed activity in the 1930’s. Tungsten mining began in the early 1900’s, peaked during the First World War, revived during the second World War, and has been a minor activity since.
