A Dwarfed Fauna from the Grayson Formation Near Lake Waco, Texas

William R. Pampe

Abstract

A diverse fauna of dwarfed specimens was collected from the Grayson Formation of Early Cretaceous age near Lake Waco, Texas. The fauna consists of adult specimens of ammonites, turritellid as well as lower-spired gastropods, clam-type bivalvia, and one horn coral. Many of the specimens have largely been replaced by hematite and a few have been replaced by pyrite. Dwarfed faunas have previously been reported from the geologically older Pawpaw, Denton, Duck Creek, and Kiamichi Formations. Several biological and/or environmental reasons are reviewed to explain the dwarfing of the different invertebrate phyla represented.
