The Fairway field is an interdomal area and seismic prospect well known to most majors and independents in East Texas. This paper discusses the subsurface and seismic exploration history prior to the discovery of oil in the James reef in August, 1960, and the subsurface information made available by development drilling. Since then approximately 23,000 acres have been proven productive from the James with development still taking place and the field limits undefined in two areas. Additional oil production has been established in the Massive Anhydrite, Rodessa, and Pettet formations.
Seismic experience indicates that the general area is a "problem" area because of the difficulty in obtaining reflections from, or near, the zone of interest and a high percentage of no-record and poor-record country. Type of surface formation, topography, erratic near-surface velocity, and faulting are major contributors to the seismic problem.
