Abstract: Oil and Gas Resources of the Soviet Union

By

W. T. Spurlock

The Soviet Union has one sixth of the Worlds Oil Reserve and four tenths of the Worlds Gas Reserve. It ranks second in oil reserve and first in Gas Reserve. It is divided into four parts based on geology and petroleum potential. Each part includes a number of sedimentary basins which produce from Cambrian through Tertiary aged rocks.

Projection of supply and demand through 1980 shows a continued growth in Soviet domestic consumption and exports. The exports will increase to about 5 percent of the Worlds Oil production by 1980, and after that little increase is expected. At that time the Soviet Union will be the only major industrial country in the world with energy supplies in excess of their own needs.
