Many papers have been written on this 1968 Smackover discovery because of the abundance of available core data. This has resulted in a number of different ideas about the origin of the field. A historical review will help one to understand previous interpretational problems.

The present study incorporates previously unpublished data, and calls for an adjusted interpretation of the structural framework of the field. It also creates an exploration concept for the trend. Faulting in the area is discussed, along with possible resolutions of some past controversies.
