By
NORM is an emerging environmental issue in the home, industry and the petroleum industry. NORM includes Radon 222. Radium 222, 228 Lead 210, gross alpha and beta particles, phospho-gypsum and many other radionuclides. New regulations have just been promulgated in Texas and by the end of 1993 it is expected that 12 states will have their own NORM regulations. The EPA is also working on NORM regulations which affect the Safe Drinking Water Act. The author will review the basic elements and definitions of NORM as well as the new regulations.
