Abstract: The Emerging Future of Biostratigraphy: Increasing the Accuracy of Depositional Histories

Although multivariate statistical treatment for taxonomy, paleobiology, and paleoenvironmental analyses have been used academically for nearly 60 years, industry has rarely made effective use of these highly informative methods. The complexity of handling and interpreting multiple-factored modeling systems has been rendered manageable by the use of computers, sophisticated programming, and a wealth of detailed paleobiological data. The end product of such an analysis is a detailed, multidimensional record of the environmental and depositional history of a section in a well or a region. Such analyses are far more sensitive to primary geologic information than many of the statistical techniques widely applied.
