Abstract: Lithologic and Stratigraphic Controls on Reservoir Quality and Target Selection for Horizontal Drilling in the Austin Chalk Trend

More than 4,000 horizontal wells have been drilled in the prolific Austin Chalk play which now stretches from southwest Texas to eastern Louisiana, at depths between 7,000' and 15,000' (2,250- 4,840 m). Although initial production rates can exceed 1,000 barrels of oil per day with cumulative production of 1 million barrels of oil, 30-40% of all horizontal wells produce less than 150,000 barrels and are not economically viable. Economic success in this play hinges on choosing and staying in the correct target horizon.
