Abstract: The Deliberate Search for the Seismic
Stratigraphic
Trap
Trap
Hamman Oil and Refining
Seismic stratigraphic analysis plays a critical role in the
complete integration and evaluation of exploration and
development projects. Despite being available
for over 25 years, seismic stratigraphic analysis
is not sufficiently utilized. This analysis leads
to better delineation of
depositional
environments,
reservoir geometry and porosity
trends. Many trends and prospects with
potentially substantial reserves onshore and
offshore Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast have
gone unrecognized as a result of a lack of a
completely integrated analysis.
There is an industry perception that a shortage of available conventional large potential prospects exists. Less than 5% of all wells drilled in the last 50 years were to depths greater than 15,000 feet. Implementation of seismic stratigraphic analysis combined with multi-attribute processing can provide a competitive advantage. Seismic interpreters are deluged with huge volumes of data as advances in seismic attributes have increased the number of volumes with multiple attribute data sets. The result is a data management and interpretation challenge for the oil industry. Seismic stratigraphic analysis is a rapid data-mining tool that is key to finding unrecognized new plays and prospects.
