Evidence for the Origin of the Canada Basin Margin by Rifting in Early Cretaceous Time*

J. F. Sweeney

Abstract

Stratigraphic relations and crustal seismic information indicate that the North American margin of Canada Basin was initiated during Early Cretaceous time in the interval 135 to 100 million years ago, with the most likely time of origin being between 125 and 115 million years ago. The evidence suggests that the margin probably resulted from rifting and separation of an adjacent continental mass. The pattern of lithospheric plate motions that produced this separation remains unclear. Thick, young sediment wedges appear to be the main source of gravity anomaly highs and magnetic anomaly lows along the present polar shelf.
